A safe barbecue is the primary goal of every good charcoal grill or gas grilling BBQ chef. After all the preparation you've made to insure happy guests, perfectly cooked food and building the bonds that accompany outdoor grilling - don't let a few common mistakes mar your outdoor barbecue event. Here are a few of our suggestions:
- Use the right location.
- Place your barbecue well away from fences, trees and overhangs on your house. It is embarrassing trying to explain "how it got started" to the Fire Department. It should go without saying that you never barbecue in a garage (or even in the open garage doorway) where there are paints, thinners, flammable cleaners and gasoline vapors to ignite - but every now and then someone learns the hard way. Consider your neighbors, as well. Note the prevailing wind direction and try to avoid smoking them out - unless they are invited over, of course, or you would like them to eventually move.
- Ignition
- Never resort to "quick ignition solutions" such as cigarette lighter fluid, gasoline, C4, TNT, gunpowder or any other . Even modern BBQ lighter fluids can be dangerous if used carelessly and/or excessively. Their vapors can "pool" and the flame can be difficult to extinguish if you should accidentally touch off the sleeve of your sweatshirt. Lighter fluids also add chemicals and other dangerous fluids to the food you eat. One of the the major safety factors of a Diamond Charcoal Island Grille is the total absence of any chemicals in the start up process. Diamond Grilles are designed to use pure natural charcoal. No Instant light, No lighter fluid, No chemicals getting in the way of the natural smoky flavors.
- Food Preparation
- First, leash the dog! You probably learned that a long time ago.
- Keep utensils and plates for cooked meat separate from those that you used to prepare it. We'd suggest that you exercise extra care if you are going to bring meat out to the grill in glass baking plates. we've all lost a few tri-tips this way when the plate and meat slipped off the side table. Better to use a metal cookie pan covered with tinfoil.
- Completely defrost all frozen food before tossing it on. Meats and all high risk foods should be kept refrigerated until the BBQ is ready. There is a tendency for barbecues to char food on the outside and leave the inside somewhat raw. Study your instructions and control your heat zones in order to give meat enough time for "center cooking." This can be a bit of a challenge since too long in a barbecue can easily lead to "rawhide" on the outside and "well done" most of the way into the cut. We discuss cooking techniques on another web page - but let's close Food Preparation by encouraging you to own and use several meat thermometers for your more robust cuts.
- Finally
- Enjoy the food but don't forget you have an extremely hot barbecue out back. Do you know where your children are? Are the gates closed so other children don't wander in?
- You may want to immediately get rid of ashes so they don't become a mess between now and next weekend. Consider putting your ashes in the garden or flowerbed if you have one. The ashes are good for the plants, in most cases. We strongly encourage you to NEVER dispose of the ashes in your trash bin unless the bin is made of metal and it holds ONLY ashes. The easiest solution is to just plumb your Diamond Charcoal Island Grille strait into the household drain where you never have to worry about the ashes.
