Broadly speaking, barbecues fall into two main categories. They are either charcoal barbecues or gas barbecues. Gas barbecues are subdivided into natural gas or propane gas barbecues. Charcoal fired barbecues are just charcoal - but often the physical design will allow for fuel additions, most often that being hickory chips for improved flavor.
Within each BBQ category you will find a wide variety of styles. The various styles accommodate the outdoor cooking habits and tastes of the BBQ chef.
The most popular charcoal barbecue styles include the Hibachi barbecue grill, the Weber charcoal bowl pit barbecue, the barrel outdoor barbecue grill and a variety of charcoal island grilles - both fixed and movable. Also, we must mention the portable barbecue - though it comes in several styles itself.
Hibachi charcoal barbecue grilles are the original portable BBQ. Most come in a single or double square shaped charcoal pit approximately 12" square or 12" by 24" rectangle shape. The cast iron grill is raised or lowered to control heat by inserting the back part into vertical slot stands spaced about 1 inch apart. Hibachis take very little space or fuel. They are very efficient and among the easiest of the small BBQs to clean. Hibachi barbecues are perfect for apartment dwellers with limited deck space.
The Weber charcoal grill is almost an American BBQ icon. They're cheap and fairly easy to assemble the first time. They stand on 3 legs and the BBQ pit looks like a large rounded Wok. Weber barbecues come in a number of sizes and include a charcoal dust catcher, a lower outside rack for accessories and inside rack for the charcoal bed. Also included is a BBQ grill and hood with vents. Almost anyone who has barbecued has used a Weber. The big benefits of a Weber charcoal barbecue grill are the low price and easy assembly. On the downside, Weber grilles tend to be top heavy and prone to tipping over. Once a bit of corrosion sets in - heat control becomes difficult because the mechanism to raise and lower the grill gets bound up. Also, the control is close enough to the bottom of the barbecue pit to present a burn danger. Weber grills are messy and difficult to clean as well. The ashes must be coaxed through several holes in the bottom of the pit into an open dust catcher. If there is any wind, you and the area around you gets covered in fine barbecue soot. Also, leaving the ashes in the open catcher may not be an option because it is open and exposed. You must dispose of the ashes immediately after you've cleaned the pit.
Barrel barbecues are fun. They're not very fancy and, like the name implies, look like half of a barrel perched on legs. You'll usually find barrel barbecues at big events and picnics with a large turnout. Barrel BBQs are meant for business! There is usually a BBQ "team" working a barrel style barbecue - which often can be as much as 12 feet in length and over 36" deep. There is not much convenient about a barrel barbecue. They're just fun. Most often, you have a team of 3 dedicated chefs… one preparing the meat, one cooking and one distributing the grilled food. It takes a while to fire a charcoal fired barrel barbecue - with a lot of attention paid to how the heat source is distributed. Some BBQ chefs like to control their cooking by the time on the grill. Others prefer to have a hotter heat source at one end of the Bar-B-Que pit than the other. Most barrel BBQ pits are not easy to clean. In fact, it's not uncommon to not clean the ashes at all. Just pile more fuel on top of the ashes for the next barbecue and those ashes eventually get turned into smoke.
Charcoal island barbecue grilles are the most convenient and versatile of all. Relatively expensive, their convenience and ease of maintenance makes up for the additional investment. The island type of BBQ can be either movable (on wheels and less expensive) or built-in… as a stationary "real improvement" to the property. A permanent outdoor island charcoal barbecue grill needs to be located with care - insuring that the prevailing weather conditions that it will be exposed to do not compromise home safety or health. These issues have to be balanced against convenience and ease of maintenance… not always an easy task. When you plan your island barbecue, make sure the factors you consider include ease of setup and maintenance. Also, it is important that the BBQ be easy to clean and keep attractive since it IS a part of your physical structure. |
